I’m absolutely in love with this DIY Sharpie Dessert Plate I collaborated on with Joanna Meyers of Baked by Joanna. It’s inexpensive and you may already have the materials in your kitchen cupboard to get started.

I love to sketch and have always been drawn to the illustrations in children’s books. I wanted to design the plate to look just as adorable with the dessert as it would be without. The circular shape of the Oatmeal Cream Pie inspired me to use a hot air ballon to frame the dessert. The design wouldn’t have been complete without a whimsical little bird floating in a tea cup below. Find out how to get started on your own dessert plate.

MATERIALS
white ceramic plate (I chose a circular salad plate)
new Sharpie (so the tip is pointed)
pencil
oven
cookie sheet

INSTRUCTIONS
1. choose a simple, white, inexpensive ceramic plate.
2. remove all stickers.
3. wash with soap and water; let dry (this will help Sharpie adhere to plate).
4. using a pencil, lightly sketch a design onto the plate (I like to sketch my idea on paper first).
5. once your design is penciled on, use your Sharpie to trace over it (make sure not to touch the lines as you work, smears are no good).
6. keep a damp paper towel nearby in case you make a mistake or want to change the design a little as you work (you can wipe away the pencil marks too).
7. now that all the lines are traced, take one last look at the design in case you need to add anything.
8. place the plate on a cookie sheet in a cool oven.
9. turn the oven on to 425 degrees F, and set the timer to 30 minutes.
10. after 30 minutes, turn off the oven and let the plate cool completely before removing.

To clean your beautiful dessert plate and not to damage your hard work, I would recommend hand washing the plate with mild soap and a soft cloth to help preserve your design. Have fun creating an entire dessert plate set for yourself or friends. And enjoy many other treats on it as well!
